I’m back. And it feels good to be communicating with all of you again. I really appreciated those of you who sent me e-mails when I said I was taking a break from the newsletter for a couple of months. They all said “Bravo! You deserve a rest.” How great it is to have readers like you who care for me. Believe me, I care for each of you, too. My life is enriched every day by the incredible blessing I’ve been given. To be able to help you recover from your cancer is the most fulfilling work I have experienced in my 75 years of life. Thank you for your caring and support.

Finally! — Nutrition With Some Science
*******************************************

I finished reading a book during my “down time” in November which I have been recommending to every cancer patient I have talked to since then. It is so far above any of the dozen or so books I have read about nutrition that there is just no comparison. The book is “The China Study” by T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Thomas M. Campbell II. Dr. Campbell has been a Cornell University professor for 30 years and Thomas is his son. Together they have put together the only truly scientific (documented and peer-reviewed) study of nutrition I have ever read.

Fortunately for you and me, this book is written for us, not for the academic community. The writing is clean and easy to read. The effort, including a ten year study in China of unprecedented detail about eating habits and health, is unique. The conclusions are absolutely irrefutable. If you don’t like that long word, this is the closest thing to “truth” you’re going to find in our lifetimes about eating and its effect on our health.

Every other book on nutrition I’ve read, including those I quote in my book, are basically “opinions.” Think about it. Did Dr. Atkins gather 10,000 people to follow his diet and study their exact eating habits and health for ten years? How about Dr. D’Adamo and his “Eat Right 4 Your Type” theory? Think about Pat Quillin’s book “Beating Cancer With Nutrition;” Dr. Jordan Rubin’s “The Maker’s Diet;” Donna Gates’ “Body Ecology Diet;” and any other of your favorite nutrution books. How about Dr. Dana Flavin-Koenig’s recommended “Foods To Avoid For Cancer Patients” and “Foods To Eat For Fighting Cancer” in my own book’s Chapter 5?

All of the above and many more books I’ve read have useful information. However, they all contradict each other in one way or another and they have little or no scientifically gathered data to back up their recommendations. Several, including Dr. Atkins and Dr. D’Adamo are based on theories which have been challenged recently by other authorities and studies. But,basically, the problem is they are all based primarily on opinion.

Well, just read “The China Study.” It’s conclusion that a “whole food, plant based” diet is the only way to get and maintain health is impossible to argue with. Hey, at least that’s my opinion. What’s yours?

Curcumin — A Really Effective Cancer Treatment

“Imagine a natural substance so smart it can tell the difference between a cancer cell and a normal cell; so powerful it can stop chemicals in their tracks; and so strong it can enable DNA to walk away from lethal doses of radiation virtually unscathed. Curcumin has powers against cancer so beneficial that drug companies are rushing to make drug versions. Curcumin is all this and more.”

That quote from the July, 2002 issue of the Life Extension Foundation magazine should get your attention. What has happened in the 4 1/2 years since then? A lot.

Get a load of this quote from a study by M.D. Anderson in Texas in September, 2003:

“Extensive research over the last 50 years has indicated [curcumin] can both prevent and treat cancer…Curcumin can suppress tumor initiation, promotion, and metastasis.”

Why isn’t this wonderful substance being used routinely in oncologist’s offices to treat cancer? Very good question. It occured to me again recently when I read a newsletter this week from Robert Redfern on this subject, which included this latest update:

“Dr. Bharat Aggarwal, who headed the 12-member team of researchers at University of Texas (U.T) M.D. Anderson Cancer Centre, said earlier this week that his clinical research has made available not only ‘the master switch to turn off cancer, but also a cure for it.’

 

‘It was already known that Curcumin can prevent cancer,’ Aggarwal said. ‘Now it can also be used to cure cancer.’ And, he added: ‘We are providing evidence that Curcumin can work on at least one dozen cancers.’

 

‘In fact, let’s put it this way: we have not found a single cancer on which Curcumin doesn’t work,’ Aggarwal asserted.”

This herb, which has been used for various healing purposes in Ayurvedic medicine for the last 5,000 years is finally getting the attention it deserves among cancer researchers. Cancer’s Untold Cost — Time For Treatment

In case you missed it, there was an interesting article in the paper last week. Lauran Neergaard of the Associated Press wrote the article with the above title. Few of us ever think about the time conventional cancer treatment costs us.

“The hours spent sitting in doctors’ waiting rooms, in line for the CT scan, watching chemotherapy drip into veins: Battling cancer steals a lot of time — at least $2.3 billion worth in the first year of treatment alone.

 

So says the first study to try to put a price tag to the time that people spend being treated for 11 of the most common cancers.

 

Even more sobering than the economic toll are the tallies, by government researchers, of the sheer hours lost to cancer care: 368 hours in that first year after diagnosis with ovarian cancer; 272 hours being treated for lung cancer, 193 hours for kidney cancer.

 

That doesn’t count the days spent home in bed recovering from surgery or weak from chemo, just time spent actively getting care — chemo or radiation therapy, blood tests or cancer scans, surgery or checkups, driving to medical appointments or waiting your turn.”

I couldn’t help comparing these figures with the cost of the time spent doing the “Bill Henderson Protocol.” That figure: $0.00. Making radical changes to your diet and taking a few key supplements probably costs you less time than you were spending before on eating. Home in bed time? None. Recovery time? 4-6 weeks. Recovery percentage? Approximately 90% plus vs 3%. Please make a vow this year to help a friend or loved one avoid the conventional cancer “conveyer belt.”

REAL GARLIC — A TIP FROM PAUL WINTER

I recently heard from Paul Winter about another subject you should pay attention to if you have or want to prevent cancer or treat and prevent heart disease — garlic. Paul, as you may know, is another “cancer crusader” who has a web site you should be familiar with. It has a wealth of free information. It is:

Paul’s e-mail last week alerted me to a new source of concentrated garlic that is far superior to any other. Here is a quote from his e-mail:

“A newly patented alkaline buffered garlic powder produced 37 times more active ingredient in a simulated stomach acid test than conventional, non-buffered garlic pills.

 

Up till now, most garlic pills have not been able to get allicin, garlic’s major active ingredient past the stomach due to stomach acid. So, although allicin content of a garlic pill could be fairly high the actual allicin that gets into a person’s bloodstream is rather small. This problem even provoked the FDA to sponsor a seminar in Washington, DC in 2000 to ask leading researchers how to standardize label claims for garlic pills. By the way, Paul is like me. We make nothing from the products we recommend.

One caution I should mention. Those of you familiar with Bob Beck’s work on cancer and AIDS treatment are probably aware that he felt nobody should eat garlic. Again, an opinion. There are lots of studies which support the health properties of garlic. I am aware of none that support Bob Beck’s aversion to it. As usual, you need to be the judge and jury in controversies like this. My general approach is to recommend cancer patients avoid anything that is controversial (soy, for example) because it usually is not essential. Is garlic an exception? Your call.
